Late in 1994, much discussion was put forward about the 'Pros' and 'Cons' of allowing international shipping companies to trade on
New Zealand's coast whilst in the process of conducting their core business - loading and unloading foreign cargo. Coast All Services
Ltd (Coast All Shipping) was registered in anticipation of the legalisation of coastal shipping. It's owner, Mr. Alex Knowles,
was well aware of the potential this niche could provide to New Zealand's Manufacturing and Distribution Industries and took the
opportunity to 'free up the coast'.
He lobbied strongly to ensure that competition prevailed and in February 1995, New Zealand’s Government agreed that this form of competition in New Zealand's domestic transport market would be beneficial to the country. So it has been! Coast All now commands a strong port coverage in partnership with a large number of international carriers. We have 'interline agreements' (freedom to book open market cargo and other lines equipment) with a number of international shipping lines. The system is very simple, Coast All is free to market each vessel prior to berthing for the convenience of our clients, which also provides the added advantage to our lines of repositioning their containers. This means the final rates to our clients are assisted by the line having its' containers moved to a more useful port. All of this adds up to one thing – cost effective transport. Our clients receive large transport cost reductions due to the greatly increased frequency of service and competition around the New Zealand coast.
